Body To Science

All medical schools in the UK require donated bodies for the medical training of undergraduates, but far fewer are needed now than in previous years. Here’s some useful information:

I’m still alive! Where to start?

There are a number of actions you can take:

  • Contact Medical School for information/leaflets.
  • Leave a witnessed statement of your desire to benefit medical research and leave this with important papers.
  • Inform your GP of your desire to donate your body to a Medical School. Tell him which one.
  • There is no need to mention this in your Will but let relatives / estate executor know.
  • There is no need to send anything to the Medical School in advance.

You can’t donate your body if…….

Medical Schools will not accept a donation of a body in the following situations:

  • If a post mortem has taken place.
  • If the cause of death was the result of a disease or some kind of infection.
  • If any organs have been removed as a result of surgery or transplant donation.
  • If any action, including disease, has altered the normal structure of the body

Individual Medical Schools will be able to send you further information.

Major Organ Transplant

All NHS Trusts have a transplant co-coordinator who should be consulted with regards to any organ donations. All transplants in the UK are looked after by UK Transplant. For further information or to register please contact them at: www.organdonation.nhs.uk.
