“Burial at sea” is the term used to describe the service whereby human remains are laid to rest on the ocean floor, rather than in the more traditional setting of a cemetery or churchyard.
They have been conducted for many centuries, particularly by the Royal Navy, and specifically when sailors and seamen died on board ship. Even now such burials are still commonly requested by those who have served in the Navy, or by people who have a long-standing association with the ocean.
Burial at sea is currently available in two locations in the UK, at The Needles, Isle of Wight and between Hastings and Newhaven on the South Coast. If either you or your loved one has expressed the desire to be buried at sea, this can be arranged by Eric F. Box.
